The Nkwe, meaning "Leopard" in Setswana, was displayed alongside Twiga's larger Nyati Armored Personnel Carrier (APC). Developed between 2022 and 2024, the Nkwe was qualified in 2024 and is designed for various military and peacekeeping operations.
Key Features of the Nkwe 4x4 MRAP
Powered by a Mercedes-Benz 4.8L four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, the Nkwe produces 218 hp and 810 Nm of torque, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. The vehicle boasts NATO STANAG Level 2 ballistic protection, which provides defense against 7.62×39 mm armor-piercing rounds. Additionally, it offers Level 3a mine protection, withstanding blasts up to 8 kg under any wheel or under the center of the hull, making it suitable for challenging operational roles like motorized infantry, counter-insurgency, special forces, and urban missions.
The Nkwe’s off-road capabilities are enhanced by its eight-speed manual-automatic transmission, Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Run Flat Inserts (RFI) for its tubeless radial tires. With a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 9,500 kilograms and a 200-liter diesel fuel tank, it is designed to operate in the most challenging terrains.
Versatile Configurations for Various Operations
The Nkwe 4x4 is highly adaptable and comes in multiple configurations, including:
Armored Personnel Carrier (APC)
Weapons Platform (WP)
Battlefield Ambulance
The vehicle has seating for 10 occupants, including the driver and commander, and features ten gun ports for added firepower. It can be fitted with both manual or remote weapon stations. The vehicle is also equipped with air conditioning providing 17,000 BTUs of cooling, ensuring comfort in harsh climates
Technology Transfer and Local Manufacturing
One of the most innovative aspects of the Nkwe is its ability to be manufactured locally, allowing for easy technology transfer to client nations. Twiga’s CEO, Damian de Lange, highlighted that the Nkwe introduces a new driveline upgrade that can be retrofitted into Twiga’s older armored vehicles, such as the Mamba and Nyoka. This upgrade improves the performance of these older models while maintaining the existing vehicle hulls, extending their operational life by two decades.
Twiga’s Commitment to Long-Term Support
Twiga Services and Logistics ensures that all Nkwe vehicles are backed by maintenance and support programs, providing clients with the necessary resources for vehicle repair and modernization. This commitment to long-term support makes the Nkwe a reliable choice for countries looking to strengthen their military vehicle fleets with a sustainable approach.
Conclusion
The Nkwe 4x4 MRAP is a cutting-edge armored vehicle that enhances South Africa’s defense capabilities and offers international clients a robust solution for military and peacekeeping operations. With its advanced protection, versatile configurations, and local manufacturing potential, the Nkwe represents a new era in military vehicle design for Twiga Services and Logistics.
