In a pivotal political development, Dada Morero, the ANC regional chair and Johannesburg MMC for finance, has been re-elected as the Mayor of Johannesburg. Morero succeeds Kabelo Gwamanda, who resigned earlier this week under pressure from the ANC to make way for Morero. This election marks Morero's second attempt at leading the city. His first term, which lasted just 25 days in 2022, was cut short when the Johannesburg high court ruled his election unlawful. Despite this setback, Morero has returned to the mayoral seat with strong support, receiving 189 votes from councillors representing the ANC, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), ActionSA, and smaller parties. His opponent, Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, managed only 60 votes, highlighting the broad coalition that has rallied behind Morero.
Leadership Changes and the Road Ahead
In his acceptance speech, Morero addressed the challenges posed by the frequent leadership changes in Johannesburg. Since 2016, when the ANC lost control of the city to the DA in local government elections, the city has seen a series of mayors come and go, creating instability. Morero emphasized the need for consistency and urged all political leaders to listen to voters as the 29 May national and provincial elections approach.
“Cities are meant to be developmental, resilient, and sustainable because they shape the form of societies,” Morero said. “We must rise above our day-to-day challenges so that we can reimagine a Johannesburg that is inclusive, colorful, and full of love. We must continue to make Johannesburg a world-class African city of the future, vibrant, equitable, and strengthened through diversity.”
Confidence in Morero’s Leadership
Outgoing speaker Margaret Arnolds expressed confidence in Morero’s ability to bring about the positive changes that Johannesburg desperately needs. She acknowledged the vast challenges facing the city but stressed that strong, united leadership could overcome them.
“I encourage all councillors and city officials to support Mayor Morero in his mission to uplift our communities and improve the lives of all Johannesburg residents,” Arnolds said. “I am committed to working closely with Mayor Morero and the entire council to ensure that Johannesburg continues to thrive. Together, we will build a city that is inclusive, forward-thinking, and committed to the well-being of its people.”
